Beluga Vodka: From a Siberian Distillery to Montenegro

Beluga Group decided to sell the international rights to the Beluga brand while keeping the trademark rights in Russia, in a transaction expected to exceed $75 million, Novabev Group said. Noblewood Group says it acquired those rights, excluding Russia, from Beluga Group in 2022.

Where Beluga vodka began

Construction of the public wine warehouse in Mariinsk began in 1898, the Mariinsk Distillery history page says. Beluga North America's chief executive, quoted by Beverage Industry in 2017, put the Siberian distillery's establishment at 1900. The distillery became part of the group now called Novabev Group in 2006, its history page says.

The Beluga recipe uses water from artesian wells and a special malt spirit produced exclusively for Beluga, by the distillery's account. Beluga Noble rests 30 days before bottling, and the image of a beluga sturgeon, shaped in tin, is applied by hand to every bottle, Beverage Industry reported.

Beluga in the United States

The first cases of Beluga Vodka were distributed in the United States in 2009, and Beluga North America opened in Hallandale Beach, Florida two years later, according to Beverage Industry. A direct ban on shipments to the US under Executive Order 14068 of 11 March 2022 was among the complications facing vodka exports from Russia, Novabev Group said.

The Montenegro factory

Noblewood Adriatic planned to open a Beluga vodka factory in Nikšić on 21 March, an archived February 2023 article from the Government of Montenegro said. The plant was to make about 30 million bottles a year for export to every market except Russia, on an investment of about 25 million euros, the article said. Noblewood operates a distillery in Latvia that sources organic spirit for Beluga vodka, as well as a production site in Montenegro, the group's website says.

In the BUY.VODKA TTB snapshot, MHW, Ltd. of Manhasset, New York filed Beluga approvals listing Russia as the label origin on file from 25 August 2021 to 10 February 2022, and approvals listing Montenegro from 18 November 2022. Every approval appears in the TTB label records for Beluga on this page.
