Stoli Vodka: The Stolichnaya Name, a Trademark Fight, and a Bankruptcy

Stoli Group ended its use of the Stolichnaya name in a 2022 rebrand and sold the vodka as Stoli. When its US company sought Chapter 7 conversion in January 2026, the court instead ordered Chapter 11 trustees appointed on 5 February 2026, filings in the case show.

Where the Stolichnaya name came from

The Soviet Union manufactured and marketed vodka under the name Stolichnaya beginning in the 1940s, the Second Circuit wrote in 2016. A Soviet state enterprise, V/O-SPI, obtained a US federal trademark for Stolichnaya vodka in 1969, in the court's account. SPI later licensed US distribution to Allied Domecq from 2001 to 2008, William Grant from 2008 to 2014, and Stoli Group from 2014, the same opinion says.

Yuri Shefler, Stoli Group's founder, said in 2022 that he had been exiled from Russia since 2002.

The US trademark dispute

A Russian court held in 2000 that V/O-SPI was not validly privatized, and Russia formed FTE in 2002 as the claimed successor, the Second Circuit recounted. In January 2016 that court vacated the dismissal of FTE's Lanham Act section 32(1) claims for lack of standing and remanded, while affirming the dismissal of its other claims. On remand, the Southern District of New York denied William Grant's motion to dismiss FTE's Count I on 29 July 2020, citing the act-of-state doctrine.

The district court denied SPI's motion for summary judgment on the basis of laches on 21 April 2026, docket entries show. On 15 May it denied FTE's motion for partial summary judgment, finding it would be unfair to apply collateral estoppel based on the Dutch or Russian judgments. CourtListener's docket lists 14 September 2026 as the date of the last known filing.

Stoli Group's US bankruptcy

Stoli Group (USA), LLC filed a voluntary Chapter 11 petition on 27 November 2024 in the US Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Texas, court records show. Louisiana Spirits and the group's global production facilities were unaffected by the US entities' bankruptcy, Stoli Group said in January 2026.

Bill Patterson was appointed trustee for Stoli Group (USA) on 18 February 2026, filings in the case show. The case is aimed at maximizing creditor recoveries through an orderly sale of the debtor's inventory, the trustee said in April. Full-time employees were down to 7 in the operating report for July 2026, from 48 at the order for relief. Counsel had appeared for the trustee of defendant Stoli Group (USA), the trademark court noted in May.

Where Stoli vodka is made

Stoli's production facilities, which handle blending, charcoal column filtration, bottling, packaging, and distribution, have been located in Latvia since 2000, Stoli Group said in 2022. Stolichnaya has been produced in the Amber Latvijas balzams factory in Riga starting in 1948, Amber Beverage Group says.

Stoli approvals listing Louisiana as the label origin on file, filed by Louisiana Spirits, LLC of Lacassine, Louisiana, begin on 28 November 2025. Each approval appears in the TTB label records filed under the Stoli and Stolichnaya names.
