Frïs Vodka: A Freeze-Distilled Nordic Brand Whose Record Has Two Versions

Frïs was pulled from the market at the end of the 1990s and relaunched in the US in September 2012, Difford's Guide says. Its name, pronounced Freeze, comes from the Danish word for frost and ice, a reference to a freeze distillation said to be unique to the brand, the guide adds.

How Frïs vodka is freeze distilled

Difford's Guide describes a six column distillation of wheat grain, with the freeze step applied in the second column, named the Lutter Column. Very low temperatures freeze fusel oil impurities into a solid mass, and after four more columns the spirit is hydrated with softened water from artesian wells in Northern Jutland and infused with minerals before filtration, the guide says. Sazerac's product catalog gives a different count: Fris is four times distilled, uses a freeze filtered process to remove impurities, and is then blended with purified water.

The 2012 US comeback of Frïs

Fris was relaunched in the US in 2012 with a new bottle designed to reflect the brand's Nordic roots, The Spirits Business reported that August. Fris Citrus Freeze and Fris Orange Freeze rolled out alongside the unflavoured product, the report said. Both flavours carry a lower strength of 35% alcohol by volume, Difford's Guide notes.

Dan Lundberg, global marketing director for Frïs, told The Spirits Business that no other vodka is created in quite the same way. The report said the three expressions would be offered in 375ml, 750ml, 1 litre, and 1.75 litre bottles.

Swedish or no longer made: where the record disagrees

Difford's Guide lists Frïs as a product of Sweden and marks it no longer made. Sazerac, for its part, announced in November 2021 that Frïs Vodka, a freeze-filtered vodka, took a Gold medal at the New York World Wine & Spirits Competition. The country of origin in Sazerac's catalog entry for the 1.75 litre bottle is the United States, with Kentucky as the subdivision.

What the US paperwork says about where Frïs comes from

In the BUY.VODKA TTB snapshot, approvals filed by Sazerac Company, Inc. of New Orleans list American (March 2023) and Louisiana (June 2025) as the label origin on file. Approvals filed by Buffalo Trace Distillery of Frankfort, Kentucky list Ireland from March to December 2025 and Kentucky in September 2025, the snapshot shows.
