Svedka Vodka: History, Owners, and Label Origins

Constellation Brands described Svedka as produced in Sweden when it bought the brand in 2007. BevNET's spirits database now describes the vodka as originally distilled in Sweden and produced domestically from American corn.

How Svedka began

Svedka was launched in 1998, Constellation Brands said in 2007. Guillaume Cuvelier was the brand's creator and the founder of Spirits Marque One, the brand owner, in Constellation's description. About 1.1 million cases were sold in 2006, mostly in the United States, the company also reported. Today the vodka is bottled at 40% ABV (80 proof), with a 100-proof variant and 70-proof flavors, Svedka's website says.

Who owns Svedka vodka

Constellation Brands announced on 6 February 2007 that it had agreed to buy Svedka from Guillaume Cuvelier and Alcofinance S.A. for $384 million. The acquisition closed on 19 March 2007, the company announced. On 3 December 2024 Constellation announced an agreement to divest Svedka to Sazerac, and The Spirits Business reported on 7 January 2025 that the sale was complete.

The Svensk Vodka ruling in Sweden

A Swedish administrative court agreed with Livsmedelsverket, the Swedish Food Agency, that Lantmännen's Svedka could not be called Swedish, because that would require Swedish water and production in Sweden, Food Supply reported in 2020. Lantmännen Reppe AB appealed, and the appeal court's judgment of 23 July 2021 records the company saying one of its products would not meet the Svensk Vodka requirements if the specification stood. Kammarrätten i Stockholm ruled that the Svensk Vodka specification may not require dilution with Swedish water in Sweden, finding the requirement incompatible with EU law.

Svedka label origins on file

In the BUY.VODKA TTB snapshot, an approval dated 7 August 2020 lists Sweden as the label origin on file. Approvals filed by The Glenmore Distillery (Sazerac Distillers) in Owensboro, dated 5 February 2021 to 12 December 2024, list Kentucky as the label origin on file and form the largest group. Others list Utah (High West Distillery) and New York (Canandaigua Wine Company / E. & J. Gallo) as label origins on file. Each approval appears in the TTB label records for Svedka.
