Taaka Vodka: An Early American Vodka That Bet on Mixability

Taaka Vodka was released during the McCarthy era, a gambit by Stephen Goldring that a Rouses Supermarkets profile called either visionary or insane. The secret of the brand's success was, and remains, written on every bottle's label, "Mixes easy…just add people," the profile says.

When Taaka vodka launched: two accounts

The company history timeline on the Sazerac website dates the launch of Taaka vodka to 1952 and calls it one of the first vodkas to be sold in the United States. The Rouses profile instead places the premiere in the late 1950s, when Taaka was one of just two vodka brands on the American market, by its account.

How vodka grew its share of the American market

"By the time the '80s came, vodka had taken over," Bill Goldring, chairman of the Sazerac Company, told the Rouses profile. Vodka's mixability took it from zero percent of the market to about one-third as the years elapsed, the profile says.

How Taaka vodka is made and served

Taaka Vodka is bottled at 80 proof, or 40% ABV, is quadruple distilled and charcoal filtered, and carries the ingredient statement Grain, the Sazerac product catalog entry for the 750ml size says. The catalog's tasting note reads clean and neutral. Its serving suggestion names a Vodka Tonic, a Vodka Soda, a Screwdriver with orange juice, a classic Vodka Martini, a Cosmopolitan, and vodka-based punches.

The Taaka Citrus flavored vodka

The Sazerac product catalog lists Taaka Citrus Vodka as a flavored vodka in a 50ml bottle at 60 proof, or 30% ABV. Its tasting note reads bright, zesty citrus, and the catalog suggests soda, tonic, ice, or lemonade for a citrus cooler.

Label origins and filers on file

The Sazerac product catalog gives Taaka Vodka a country of origin of the United States and the subdivision Kentucky. An approval filed by The Glenmore Distillery of Owensboro, Kentucky in January 2022 lists Kentucky as the label origin on file, the TTB snapshot shows. Approvals filed by Sazerac Company, Inc. of New Orleans from March 2023 to February 2026 list American and Louisiana as the label origin on file. A July 2023 approval filed by Sazerac Distillers, LLC dba Barton Brands of California, of Carson, California, lists Kentucky as the label origin on file.
