Stumbras Vodka: A Kaunas Distillery With Four US Filers on File

Kaunas State Wine Warehouse Number 1 was erected in 1906 at the intersection of what are now Bažnyčios Street and Girstupio Street, with the mission of boosting the region's economy, Stumbras's history page says. The company says it has highly intensified its exports since 2008 and now sells its products in over 30 countries.

How the Kaunas distillery began

The 1906 site included an electric power station, a charcoal burner for filtration, six artesian wells, and a rail connection, Wikipedia says. The company name translates as wisent, the article adds.

In the first independent Lithuanian republic, after the declaration of independence from Russia, the government considered the Kaunas warehouse one of its most important economic units, Stumbras's history page says. The warehouse provided large orders for glass factories, carpenters, and printing houses, by the same account.

Updated brands and new Stumbras vodkas

All of the main brands were updated, new products such as The Nines Sweet, The Nines Citrus, and Stumbras Vodka Centenary were released, and the technological base was completely revamped, the history page says. The company introduced several new vodka and brandy products in 2006 and 2007, and the Stumbras museum opened in Kaunas at the end of 2009, Wikipedia says. Sales over January to November 2007 rose 63 percent year-on-year to 143.2 million litas, and CEO Ceslovas Matulevicius credited new products including Stumbro Duonos vodka, The Baltic Times reported that December.

Stumbras vodka abroad

In 2003 Stumbras planned to start exporting to Latvia with Kosher vodka, Trejos Devynerios, and Starka under Latvian-language labels, at a time when 97 percent of its production sold in the local market, The Baltic Times reported. Exported production today includes vodka, bitter, liqueur, and brandy, the history page says. The company says its beverages follow recipes that go back as far as the late 19th century alongside modern recipes, and that the packages of Lithuanian Vodka and Stumbras Vodka have won gold medals at European design competitions.
