Big Spring Vodka: Made With Bellefonte's Big Spring Water in an Old Match Factory

Big Spring Spirits opened its distillery and tasting room in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania in July 2014 and scheduled its grand opening for 9 August, StateCollege.com reported that month. Its water comes from Bellefonte's Big Spring, and its corn, rye, and wheat come from local farmers, who take back the leftover grain, called the draff, as cattle feed, the site reported.

Who started Big Spring Spirits

Kevin Lloyd, originally from Indiana County, Pennsylvania, was an early retiree looking for new opportunities, StateCollege.com wrote in 2014. He attended classes at Michigan State and found a mentor in Walter Catton III of the Coppercraft distillery in Holland, Michigan, before partnering with Paula Cipar, a local interior designer. Cipar, originally from Pottsville, shared a childhood family favorite called Boilo, a moonshine-based hot whiskey, citrus, and spice drink, and told Lloyd they needed to make it, the column said.

Why Big Spring Spirits is in Bellefonte's Match Factory

The Pennsylvania Match Company was started in Bellefonte in 1899, grew into one of the largest match producers in the United States with up to 400 employees, and closed in 1947, the Centre County Encyclopedia of History and Culture records. By 1912 the plant was fully automated, with the nearby Big Spring supplying water for its steam boiler, the encyclopedia adds. The complex was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001 and later renovated as the American Philatelic Society's headquarters and as space for lease, by the same account.

Where Big Spring Spirits has grown

The first official batches of Big Spring Vodka were poured at the State College restaurants Local Whiskey and Gigi's in 2014, StateCollege.com said. The distillery distributes its vodkas, gins, rums, whiskeys, and bourbons throughout Pennsylvania by delivery and through restaurants and bars, and it opened a location at Seven Fields in Butler County, StateCollege.com reported in 2021. A second distillery, The Distillery at South Shore, was planned for the Joseph Finch & Co. building in Pittsburgh, a whiskey distillery built in 1856.

By February 2023 the company also had a tasting room in Sewickley, and Lloyd put the Pittsburgh project at $22 million, the Centre County Gazette reported. In August 2024 the distillery partnered with the Scholar Hotel in State College to pour its flagship vodka and barrel-aged whiskeys from a line of 15 spirits, StateCollege.com said.
