Finlandia Vodka: Barley Spirit From Koskenkorva, Spring Water From Rajamäki

Alko established Finlandia in 1970, and a year later it became the first Scandinavian vodka sold in the US, Difford's Guide says. Its barley spirit is distilled at one Finnish site and blended with spring water at another, by the guide's account.

Where Finlandia's barley spirit is distilled

Finlandia is distilled from Finnish six-row barley, a Nordic variety that yields less than two-row barley, at the Koskenkorva distillery in the Ilmajoki municipality, about 400km north of Helsinki, Difford's Guide says. Difford's dates Koskenkorva's establishment to 1944, with a New Distillery built between 1971 and 1973 and modernised in 1987. The Koskenkorva website marks other milestones: the first experimental distillation took place in spring 1941, and production started for good in 1953.

Koskenkorva sits in Southern Ostrobothnia on the bank of the Kyröjoki river and took its name from a railway station dating from 1911, the website says. In its early days Koskenkorva was distilled from potatoes, soon replaced by barley that grew well in the coastal fields, by the same account. Growers who supply the distillery carry knowledge of specific barley cultivars, such as Kaarle and Elmeri, the website adds.

Where Finlandia is blended with spring water

The spirit travels by rail to Rajamäki, where Vilhelm Juslin set up a yeast factory for bread in 1888 and soon added distillation, Difford's Guide says. There the barley distillate is blended with water from nearby glacial springs that needs no filtration or chemical purification, per the same profile. The water is not treated at all, with no deionization, osmosis treatment, or removal of minerals, and only a mechanical filter removes visible particles, the guide adds.

How the Finlandia range grew

The launch packaging was the work of the designer Wirkkala, Difford's Guide notes. Difford's product blurbs date a cranberry-flavoured expression, originally coloured red by the berries, to autumn 1994, and a citrus-flavoured extension to 1999.
