Goral Vodka Master: A Slovak Vodka From the Old Distillery at Stará Ľubovňa
Goral Vodka Master is named in homage to the Gorals, indigenous people of the highest peaks of Slovakia's Tatra Mountains who are said to "excel in physical strength as well as spiritual purity", The Spirits Business reported in 2016. GAS Familia said the vodka's seven-time charcoal and diamond filtration and seven distillations deliver an "odorlous, smooth and pure vodka", Drinks International reported.
How Goral Vodka Master is made
The vodka is created from select durum wheat varieties, with the column distillations run through a "special blend" of natural materials before water from the nearby Tatra Springs is added, The Spirits Business said. Beverage Information Group described a late harvest of that wheat, mineral-enriched water from underground mountain springs, a 7-column still, and micro-filtration. "I strived to perfect the distilling process to produce smooth, clean and timeless tasting vodka," GAS Familia's master distiller Jan Krak told The Spirits Business.
The bottle's black and white design carries two red sevens as a cipher for the factory's process, says DANCO DECOR, the Ukrainian decorator that silk-screened it with ceramic inks.
The old distillery in Stará Ľubovňa: two accounts of its age
GAS Familia's website says its distillery continues a more than 300-year tradition of professional distilling in the town, whose first indirect references date from 1235. Archival documents place the oldest preserved distillery in Slovakia there, built in the middle of the 18th century, the site adds.
Beverage Information Group instead called it the world's oldest preserved distillery, with evidence of a grain-based distillate similar to vodka as far back as 650 years ago.
The distillery sits on a plot adjacent to a nearly thousand-year-old castle, records show it was operating at full capacity by 1746, and its bones still exist beneath the castle, the gin review site The GIN is IN says.
Where Goral Vodka Master has launched
An international roll out of Goral Vodka Master was planned for 2011 to the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, and the US, where GAS Familia said it would compete with Grey Goose, Belvedere, and Ketel One, Drinks International reported. The brand's primary focus was the on-trade, the same report said.
In 2016 GAS Familia Distillery, the second largest producer of alcoholic beverages in Slovakia, partnered with the distributor Karla & Co Spirits to introduce Goral Vodka Master as the "first" Slovakian vodka in the UK market, The Spirits Business reported.
