Grey Goose Vodka: A 1997 Creation Made in France

Bacardi Limited agreed to buy Grey Goose from Sidney Frank Importing Co., and the two companies did not disclose financial terms, the Associated Press reported on 20 June 2004. An anonymous industry source put the price at around $2 billion, the report said, while The Globe and Mail cited an earlier Wall Street Journal estimate of more than $2 billion (US).

Who created Grey Goose vodka

Sidney Frank and the brand's Maître de Chai (Cellar Master), Francois Thibault, created Grey Goose in 1997, Bacardi's website says. Frank, an entrepreneur, and Thibault decided to create a vodka with a distinctive taste rather than try to be flavorless, Grey Goose's own website says of its founders. Thibault created a vodka designed to express the true taste and character of the ingredients, Bacardi's website says.

Sidney Frank Importing, the company that sold the brand

Sidney Frank Importing Co. is a closely held company based in New Rochelle, New York, and was started in 1972 by chairman Sidney Frank, according to The Globe and Mail. Frank was chairman and chief executive of the New Rochelle importer, which markets Jagermeister and other alcoholic beverages in the United States, the Associated Press reported. Industry estimates put US sales of Grey Goose at some 1.4 million cases in 2003, the same report said. Bermuda-based Bacardi expected the sale to be completed in the next few months, pending approval by US antitrust regulators, according to The Globe and Mail.

Where Grey Goose vodka is made

Grey Goose uses two ingredients: single-origin Picardie winter wheat and natural spring water from Cognac, and every step is done in France, Bacardi's website says. The vodka was distilled and bottled in Cognac, France, and came in Original, L'Orange, Le Citron, and La Vanille varieties, Beverage Industry reported on 1 July 2004. Each approval appears in the TTB label records for Grey Goose on this page.
