Ketel One Vodka: Pot Still Number One and the 2008 Diageo Deal

Ketel One Vodka was created in 1983 by the 10th generation of the Nolet family, whose distillery dates to 1691, Ketel One's website says. Every bottle is made in Schiedam, Holland, a city said to be where brandy and jenever were invented, the same site says.

The Nolet family and the Schiedam distillery

The Nolet Distillery has been owned by the Nolet family from its establishment in Schiedam, the distillery's own website says. Eleven generations of the family have run the distillery, Ketel One's website counts. Each family member who has headed the distillery is listed on the side of the bottle, the brand says.

How Ketel One is made

Ketel One combines modern distilling techniques with traditional copper pot stills, by the brand's account. Its label carries an image of the original copper pot still, after which the distillery is named, and the still's Dutch name translates as Pot Still Number One.

Who sells Ketel One

Carolus Nolet Snr set up Nolet Spirits U.S.A. in 1991 to handle the marketing and distribution of Ketel One in the United States, the Nolet Distillery says. In 2008 Diageo acquired a 50% stake in the distribution and sale of Ketel One, the distillery says. A key condition set by the Nolet family was that Ketel One would be produced in Schiedam in perpetuity, it adds.

Diageo Brands and Nolet agreed on 5 February 2008 to create a 50:50 company that would hold the intellectual property licence and distribution rights for Ketel One brands, the UK Office of Fair Trading records. Nolet kept legal ownership of the brands and its manufacturing facility in the Netherlands, the case page adds. The office gave its decision on the joint venture on 29 February 2008.
