Pickers Vodka: From a Nashville Column Still to Lynnville, Tennessee
Pickers Vodka was released in April 2015 from a dedicated column still at SPEAKeasy Spirits Distillery in Nashville as Pickers Original Vodka, Pickers Blueberry Vodka, and Pickers Blood Orange Vodka, Beverage Industry reported that June. Whiskey was the Penningtons' dream, but vodka can be produced quickly and both of them knew the vodka business, Southern Exposure Magazine wrote in 2019.
Who started Pickers Vodka
Pennington Distilling Co., formerly SPEAKeasy Spirits Distillery, was started in 2011 by husband and wife Jeff and Jenny Pennington, Beverage Industry reported in 2018, and it sources most of its grains from Renfroe Farms in Huntington, Tennessee. The two met as freshmen at Franklin High School, reconnected in Nashville working for competing spirits distributors, and found on their European honeymoon that people knew Tennessee for Elvis Presley and Jack Daniel's, Southern Exposure Magazine wrote. In 2011 the couple began distilling whiskey as the base for Tennessee Sipping Cream after zeroing in on the cream liqueur category, the magazine added. Jeff Pennington is the company's founder and chief executive officer, Beverage Industry said in a December 2018 report.
How Pickers vodka is made
The vodka is made with non-genetically modified corn and is gluten free, Beverage Industry reported in 2015. It is distilled 11 times through the column still, filtered four times, and blended with Tennessee limestone water, and the distillery worked with a supplier for California-grown blood orange juice for the Blood Orange vodka. A 1.75-liter bottle carried a suggested price of $22.99, and the first markets included Tennessee, Georgia, South Carolina, Illinois, and Kentucky.
The Pickers bottle and the canned cocktails
The original Pickers had been sold in a stock bottle with a plastic closure and a label featuring a guitar head and the Pickers logo, Packaging Strategies wrote in 2019. Berlin Packaging and Studio One Eleven redesigned the bottle in 2018, and distribution expanded to 17 states afterward, the company told Beverage Industry.
Pickers canned cocktails at 6 percent alcohol by volume debuted in June 2018 in 12-ounce slim cans in four flavors, Music City Mule, Honky Tonk Hurricane, Porch Picker, and Lemon & Blues, Beverage Industry reported.
Nashville, the Flora-Bama, and the move to Lynnville
Pennington Distilling ceased operations and ended tours and tastings at its facility in The Nations in November 2024, the Nashville Scene reported, adding that Jeff Pennington said the company's brands were still being distributed to retailers. Pickers was one of the top-selling vodkas at the Flora-Bama Lounge in Perdido Key, Florida, the report said.
The brand's website calls Pickers Vodka a tribute to its hometown of Nashville and the musicians who bring it to life, and invites visitors to Lynnville to see how the vodka is made.
In the BUY.VODKA TTB snapshot, Pickers approvals filed by Pennington Distilling Company (Speakeasy Spirits, LLC) of Nashville run through February 2025, and later approvals were filed by Big Machine Distillery (Tenn South Distillery LLC) of Lynnville and Nashville. Every approval is listed in the TTB label records for Pickers on this page.
