St. Julian Distillery: History and Production

The Paw Paw, Michigan winery behind this brand is the oldest craft distiller in Michigan and has made spirits from 1998, Rural Innovation Exchange reported. The spirits are made in a Christian Carl copper column still from locally sourced fruits and grains under head distiller Bob Bilton, the winery's website says.

Where the St. Julian name came from

Mariano Meconi, an Italian immigrant, started Border City Wine Cellars in Windsor, Canada in 1921 and moved to Detroit in 1933, Rural Innovation Exchange recounts. He later moved operations to Paw Paw, and during World War II he gave the company its present name, after San Giuliano, patron saint of his native village of Faleria, Italy, the same feature says.

Four generations behind St. Julian Distillery

In August 2022 Apollo Braganini II succeeded his father John Braganini as head of the company, which produces around 300,000 cases of wine a year, Rural Innovation Exchange reported. John Braganini had led the company from 2016 and stayed on as board chairman, the feature added.

Six tasting rooms welcome more than 300,000 visitors a year, John Braganini said on the company's website in 2022.

What St. Julian Distillery vodka is made from

The spirits portfolio includes vodka from cherries, flavored vodkas from potatoes, and bourbon, and anything grown in Michigan has been fermented into wine or used in the spirits program, Rural Innovation Exchange reported. The line also includes rum and brandy, a Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs release noted in October 2023. The same release said the Michigan Liquor Control Commission presented Nancie Oxley, its vice president of winemaking, a Certificate of Tribute as the first female head winemaker in Michigan. The company works with more than 25 growers across Michigan and uses cherries, raspberries, peaches, and pears, Oxley said in 2022. See the TTB label records on this page.
