Tovaritch Vodka: A Name That Translates to Friend or Companion

In February 2022 the company behind Tovaritch switched to European production to distance the brand from Russia and its attacks on Ukraine, SLTN reported in April 2024. The switch brought a new blue and white brand identity replacing the previous red logo, SLTN said.

The family recipe behind Tovaritch

Count Jule Rene Litta, the Order of Malta's ambassador to Empress Catherine II, was allowed to develop a vodka with the master distillers of the imperial court, and the formula stayed a family secret for generations, the brand's website says. TSI S.A. founder and CEO Eugenio Litta Modignani rediscovered the recipe, then relaunched it in the 20th century, SLTN said.

When Tovaritch was made in Russia

In 2012 Australian Bartender described Tovaritch as produced and bottled in the Saint Petersburg region of Russia, five times distilled and twenty times filtered, and newly available in Australia through NILWA. After the move, the count is 10 filtrations, with the vodka bottled at 37.5% ABV, by SLTN's April 2024 account. By June 2017 The Spirits Business described a grain vodka produced in Russia by Geneva-based Tovaritch Spirits International SA and filtered through birch charcoal and silver. It was then one of the top three Russian vodkas sold in the UK, the publication said.

The brand reported a 3% sales increase in 2017 and aimed to become the second best-selling Russian vodka in the UK on-trade by 2020, the publication said in 2018.

Markets from Toronto to Brussels Airport

Tovaritch entered the United Arab Emirates through distributor Holiday Group and Canada through Winehouse Imports in 2016, with first deliveries to Toronto restaurants and bars and a goal of a full LCBO listing, The Spirits Business reported. In 2019 it signed with importer Truebell for the UAE, launched in both terminals at Brussels Airport, and expanded in Canada through the Société des Alcools du Québec, the publication said. A 1.75-litre bottle for the core expression was released that year, the same report said.

By 2024 it was sold in markets including the UK, Italy, Benelux, Latvia, Australia, and New Zealand and had begun exporting to Mexico, The Spirits Business reported. A Gold medal in the “super-premium” category of The Vodka Masters 2024 brought its 150th international trophy, the report added. The company sees the UK and Australia as its next growth areas, SLTN said.

A September 2024 release announced plans for Tovaritch's first appearance at Bar Convent Berlin. The release describes a vodka made from traceable European wheat in a 70cl bottle with a recommended price of around £23 to £25.

Where Tovaritch is made and the origins on file
