Blue Ice Vodka: Idaho Potatoes Distilled Once in Rigby

Blue Ice began with what its founders called a "Vodka Vision" in 1988, when three Sun Valley-area entrepreneurs, Philip Ottley, Jack Kennedy, and Norman Clark, saw their future in the potato fields near Wyoming's Teton Mountains, Sun Valley Magazine wrote. Gray Ottley, Philip's son, came aboard in 1996 to market the potato vodka, the magazine added.

How the Rigby distillery started

A fuel-alcohol plant in Rigby, Idaho had sat idle since the late-1970s energy crisis, and the partners made their first vodka there four years after their venture began, following a complete overhaul, the magazine said. In January 1997, The Seattle Times described Teton Glacier Vodka from the small Silver Creek distillery in Rigby, made from local potatoes and Rocky Mountain water. The Teton name comes from Rigby's position at the western end of the Teton Mountain Range, the paper added.

The distillery went on to make and distribute brands for clients such as Liquid Ice, Square One, 44 North Huckleberry, Orange V, and Zodiac, Sun Valley Magazine said.

How Blue Ice vodka is made

The distillery uses a four-column, 110-plate, single distillation, and Gray Ottley's answer to how many times the vodka is distilled is "Just once", Sun Valley Magazine wrote. Its water comes from a 200-foot-deep well on the Snake River Plain of eastern Idaho, the magazine said. In 2004 the Beverage Tasting Institute ranked Blue Ice a 94, the highest rating given an American-made vodka, company president Jim Myerson told the magazine. Company literature called Distilled Resources the operator of the only potato distillery in Idaho and America's longest-running producer of potato vodka, the magazine noted.

The 2017 bottle and the range today

In June 2017 the brand unveiled packaging inspired by prohibition-era bottles, with an embossed Idaho state emblem and text stating the vodka is produced in Rigby, Idaho, 21st Century Spirits president Thomas Gibson told BXP Magazine. The bottle also carries an inspection seal with the master distiller's initials, the magazine said. Today the brand's website lists Potato Vodka, Organic Wheat Vodka, Huckleberry Vodka, and Double Espresso Vodka. Every approval is listed in the TTB label records for Blue Ice on this page.
