Cîroc Vodka: A Cognac Family's Grape Vodka, Launched in 2003

Jean-Sébastien Robicquet worked for Hennessy in Singapore and then for the cognac house Hine, and after ten years felt a calling back home to Villevert in Cognac, Difford's Guide recounts. With cognac in crisis in 1999, he decided cognac was not the answer, saw white spirits as the fastest-growing area, and went on to create Cîroc Vodka in 2003.

Why Cîroc vodka is made from grapes

Several of Robicquet's ancestors were mayors of Cognac in the 16th century and pioneered the cognac business in the early 17th century, Difford's Guide says. Robicquet had earned an oenology diploma in 1988 and a master's in law, economics, and management of the wine industry in 1990, the brand website says. He chose to make his vodka exclusively from grape spirit, particularly Ugni Blanc, the cognac region's key variety, Difford's product entry adds.

How Cîroc is distilled five times

Grapes are made into a wine, the wine is distilled four times in column stills, and a fifth distillation follows in a tailor-made copper pot still, Cîroc's website says. The London Economic described Mauzac Blanc and Ugni Blanc "snap frost" grapes from the Cognac region, with the Ugni Blanc's first four distillations in stainless steel columns and the Mauzac Blanc in copper. The two distillates are blended 95 to 5 and distilled once more, the same article said.

Where the distillery is: three accounts

The fifth distillation takes place at Maison Villevert Salles d'Angles in the south of France, Cîroc's website says. The London Economic instead places the distillation at the Distillerie de Chevanceaux near Bordeaux. Difford's Guide lists the Ciroc Distillery address as Villevert, Merpins, Cognac.

The US launch and the flavour range

Cîroc launched in the US in February 2003, when the perception was that vodka was made from grain, Difford's Guide says. Flavours followed over the next two decades, from Coconut in 2010 through Amaretto, Apple, and French Vanilla to Passion in 2022, the guide records.
