Dark Door Spirits: The Tampa Distillery Behind Pandemic at the Disco Vodka
Dark Door Spirits pledged fifty percent of the profits from its Pandemic at the Disco vodka to charities supporting the local hospitality industry, including a U.S. bartenders guild COVID-19 relief fund, That's So Tampa wrote in 2021. Co-founders Matthew Allen and Brandon Marshall had started Cerberus Craft Distillery with the Dark Door Spirits brand and one goal, to create “a damn good product,” the same article said.
When Dark Door Spirits started: three accounts
The distillery got its start in 2015, ABC Action News reported in 2021. Its first spirit, The Spirit of IPA, hit the market in the summer of 2016, in That's So Tampa's telling. Business Observer, for its part, reported in October 2018 that Tampa's newest craft distillery had debuted its inaugural products, Spirit of Prohibition gin and Spirit of IPA whiskey, at the Whiskey Tampa Foxtrot event.
Florida grain and beer-to-whiskey spirits
The distillery follows a grain-to-glass model, getting most of its grain from Florida sources such as the University of Florida's agriculture program, according to ABC Action News. It has also worked with Green Bench Brewing Company, Motorworks Brewing, and Cigar City on beer-to-whiskey spirits, and CEO Matt Allen told the station the distillery is probably known for unique and creative spirits.
The vodka named for the pandemic
The Pandemic at the Disco label is an homage to pandemic life, with toilet paper strung from palm trees and masks on the distillery's mascot Cerberus, Wine X Magazine wrote in December 2021. By then the distillery had just released two smoked rums, mesquite and hickory, and its warehouse held the whole operation of distilling, aging, bottling, and tasting on premises, the same piece said.
Visiting Dark Door Spirits
The distillery is at 6608 Anderson Road in Tampa, where one-hour tours cost $15 and include a walkthrough of the process, a look at the equipment, and samples, ABC Action News reported in 2021.
