Florida Cane Vodka: A Sugarcane Vodka Named for Florida Places and Made in Tampa

Florida Cane originated in 2012 with the concept of catching the best of Florida in every bottle, the Osprey Observer reported in 2014. Its Friday and Saturday tasting room, with a presentation of about thirty minutes, was Florida's first vodka tasting room, the paper said.

The Florida place names on Florida Cane flavored vodkas

The fruit flavors pay homage to local places, among them Orlando Orange, Weeki Wachee Watermelon, Okeechobee Cherry, and Plant City Strawberry, the Osprey Observer said. By 2017 there were 12 flavors of Cane Vodka at about $25, made in a 50-gallon reflux column and all starting with Florida cane sugar and filtered water from the Floridan aquifer, the Tampa Bay Times reported. A Fire Ant jalapeno vodka and a holiday Candy Cane vodka with pomegranate and peppermint were in the line, the paper added.

Who started Florida Cane

Florida Cane was started by Pat O'Brien and Lee Nelson, That's So Tampa wrote in 2016. Nelson had been interested in brewing beer until a trip to a San Francisco distillery turned his interest to spirits, Tampa Magazine reported in 2020.

From Falkenburg Road to Ybor City

The company began on Falkenburg Road, where a 55 gallon drum blended about 22 and a half cases in 45 minutes and at most eight people worked in the distilling room at one time, Nelson told the Osprey Observer.

After a tasting room opened in the year after launch, the distillery moved to the El Encanto building in Ybor City in May 2016, and foot traffic rose to about 200 visitors a weekend, the Tampa Bay Times wrote. The new space measured 2,500 square feet, twice the original size, and a ribbon cutting was scheduled with Mayor Bob Buckhorn, That's So Tampa reported.

Where Florida Cane vodka is sold

The jalapeno vodka was developed for the restaurant Ulele and is featured in its ring-of-fire cocktail, Lee Nelson told FOX 13, which also reported that Walt Disney World had bought the orange-flavored vodka for almost five years. The brand's 32 varieties were in more than 300 restaurants and 180 liquor stores, and the team made about 2,000 cases of spirits a month, Nelson told the station. Florida Cane Vodka sponsored the Tampa Bay Lightning and took part in EPCOT's Food and Wine Festival, the Osprey Observer noted in 2014.

In the BUY.VODKA TTB snapshot, Florida Cane approvals were filed by The Florida CANE Distillery, INC. of Tampa through April 2024, and approvals from April to July 2024 were filed by 82 West Distilling (The Rum Project, LLC) of Tampa. Every approval is listed in the TTB label records for Florida Cane on this page.
