Hayner Distilling Co: A Troy, Ohio Whiskey Name Revived After a Century, Now With Vodka

Lewis Hayner built a distillery on Water Street in Troy, Ohio in 1866, and the Water Street distillery was shut down in 1920, the Troy-Hayner Cultural Center says. The road to relaunching began in 2018, when founders Greg Taylor and Andrew Wannemacher revisited the Hayner Whiskey Museum in Troy after completing the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, the company's history page says.

The mail-order whiskey business before 1920

Over its first 50 years, Hayner Distilling grew into one of the largest distilleries in Ohio and the largest mail order whiskey business in the United States, the history page says. Around the 1890s Walter Kidder had the company increase its advertising and sell whiskey discreetly to individuals by mail, the Troy-Hayner Cultural Center's museum page says. Bottles went out in brown paper boxes marked only "Box 290." At its peak the Troy distillery ran around the clock and had distributorships in 14 locations, including Dayton, Atlanta, San Francisco, and Washington D.C., the museum adds.

After Lewis Hayner died in 1892, the company took Charles Hayner's name, the cultural center records. As anti-alcohol sentiment grew, the company tried Hayner cigars, Hayner juice, and Hayner soda pop, to no great consequence, by the same account. The center's collection of Hayner bottles and jugs spans more than 56 years of manufacturing, it says.

How the Hayner name came back

The company decided to partner with Bardstown Bourbon Company in Bardstown, Kentucky, the history page says. Hayner Bourbon and Hayner Rye blends launched in 2021, and the company returned to Bardstown in 2022, by the same account. It continues to partner with Bardstown and MGP to source its whiskey blends.

Working with Bardstown Bourbon Company, the company created a blend complementary to the original Hayner, its home page says. Lewis Hayner's small distillery stood on the banks of the Miami River, and the company bottles near those same river banks, the home page adds.

Hayner Distilling Co vodka and its flavors

The company's spirits list includes Hayner Gin, Hayner Vodka, Hayner Strawberry Lemonade Vodka, Hayner Lemonade Vodka, Hayner Green Apple Vodka, and Hayner Snozzberry Vodka. Hayner Vodka carries a retail price of $19.95 on the company's product page.

The 1971 film Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, in which Wonka invents lickable wallpaper with a flavor he calls Snozzberry, inspired the Snozzberry vodka, the company says.
