Member's Mark Vodka: From Rue 33 to Two House Vodkas and Many Label Origins on File
NBC News reported in January 2010 that Sam's Club would launch Rue 33, a new store-brand vodka, that month in more than 240 stores. Store-brand spirits were unusual then, though Costco already had its Kirkland label of vodka, scotch, tequila, wines, and beer, the report noted.
How Rue 33 started the Member's Mark spirits line
Rue 33 was a French vodka added under the Member's Mark store brand, selling in 1.75-liter bottles for about $28, NBC News said. It was the first spirit launched under the brand, a wheat vodka from the Cognac region of France that was distilled six times, filtered three times, produced by Louis Royer, and imported by Shaw Ross, Supermarket News reported.
The Beverage Testing Institute gave Rue 33 a 91 rating in a review of about a dozen vodkas, the same report said.
The later French and American vodkas
The line has since grown to vodka, whisky, tequila, rum, and gin, Mashed reported in 2022. The French vodka had lost its Rue 33 name and sold for just under $20 a bottle in 2022, and whether its recipe matches the original is unclear, by the same account. Member's Mark French Vodka is bottled at 40% ABV, distilled five times in column stills from wheat grown in France by local farmers, with water drawn from a well on the distillery's estate, The Daily Pour says.
The American vodka is made in Louisville, Kentucky from American corn, is 80 proof, and is distilled six times, Mashed reported, citing Sam's Club. The Beverage Testing Institute scored it 93 out of 100 and found aromas and flavors of lemon tea, powdered sugar, dried herbs, and a touch of black licorice, the same article said.
