Monopolowa Vodka: From a Lwów Distillery to Potato Vodka Made in Austria

Monopolowa and Perła were the two flagship products of the Baczewski firm of Lwów, today Lviv, Wikipedia's Baczewski article says. Eduard Gessler was responsible for reintroducing the vodka, a potato vodka made to a traditional formula, the same article says.

Where the Baczewski firm began

A distillery opened in 1782 in Wybranówka, a Lwów suburb, under merchant Lejb Beczeles, and in 1810 Leopold Maksymilian Baczewski moved the firm to Zniesienie, Wikipedia says. The firm introduced a double rectification process two years after Aeneas Coffey invented it, supplied the imperial court in Vienna, and received the Imperial and Royal Warrant of Appointment, by the same account. Józef Adam Baczewski, a spirits technology specialist, expanded the factory, bought new production lines in France and the Netherlands, and built a new refinery, Wikipedia says. He exported to France, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Germany, and ordered all export spirits sold in crystal carafes rather than bottles, the article adds.

Its carafe-shaped pavilion was the most visited exhibit at the 1894 National Fair in Lwów, Wikipedia says.

What happened to the Lwów factory

The factory was bombed by the Luftwaffe in 1939, and after the Soviet seizure of the city its remnants were levelled, Wikipedia says. The reconstituted company in Austria exported to Australia, Africa, Asia, Europe, and North America, most notably the United States, and was the only Austrian liquor industry representative at the 1950 International World Fair in Chicago, the article says. Monopolowa was launched and introduced to the United States in 1958, according to the episode notes of the Liquor and Liqueur Connoisseur podcast, which also date the return of Baczewski products to Poland as imports to 2011.

Who makes Monopolowa vodka today

The Gessler company behind the Altvater name dates to 1777 in Bromberg, today Bydgoszcz in Poland, and its brand name Altvater means old father, Wikipedia's Gessler article says. The company, Altvater Gessler, lists Vodka Monopolowa, Monopolowa Dry Gin, Altvater liqueurs, and Suweren whisky on its website, which gives its address as Strobelgasse 2/6, 1010 Vienna. The website describes Monopolowa as triple distilled from potatoes and gluten free. Every approval is listed in the TTB label records for Monopolowa on this page.
