Ocean's Daughter Distillery: A Mermaid-Named Vodka Line From a Washington Coast Winery

Kim Roberts of Westport Winery and her daughter Carrie traveled around the country checking out distillers, then decided to start a distillery and name it Ocean's Daughter, The Daily World reported in June 2019. Roberts said a vodka could be produced in a little more than a week once distilling began, while whiskey would take longer, and the family had a wheat grower source in eastern Washington.

How the Roberts family added a distillery to Westport Winery

Roberts and her husband Blain started the winery in 2008, and their son Dana, the winery's head winemaker, was to take up distilling, The Daily World reported. By mid-June 2019 Roberts had finalized the purchase of an American-made still. The family planned to produce vodka, gin, whiskey, agave spirits, and rum, and Roberts said the winery's gardens would supply flavor infusing with strawberries and blueberries on the cranberry coast. The planned theme was "Pirates and scalawags welcome," and the motto paired a woman who drinks like a fish with a man who swears like a sailor.

Where the mermaid names come from

Roberts, an artist with two architecture degrees, was designing the Mermaid Room spirits tasting room, and she said Sirena and Selkie are different cultural names for mermaids, the same report said. The label art for Selkie, along with all the other spirits, was created by Kim Roberts, Kane's Beverage News Daily reported in October 2020. By then the distillery had released nine new selections, bringing its list to 40 spirits, and it made cream liqueurs only in winter. A portion of the proceeds from every spirit went to the International Mermaid Museum then being built at the resort.

What Ocean's Daughter Distillery vodka is made from

The vodka is made from six-times distilled corn, and Nayada, the lead vodka, takes its name from the Russian for water nymph, Westport Winery's distillery page says. The flavored vodkas on the same page are Bluegill huckleberry, Rock Dance Meyer lemon, Sea Star raspberry vanilla, Sirena passionfruit orange guava, Spanish Dancer chocolate espresso, Tiger's Blood blood orange, and Undine fruit cereal. The gin, Meermin, after the Dutch word for mermaid, begins as vodka and is then distilled with botanicals, including those most prevalent in the winery's gardens. Carrie Roberts told The Daily World in 2019 that Dana loves the Nayada Vodka.

Where Ocean's Daughter Distillery spirits are made, and the 2021 fire

Ocean's Daughter Distillery spirits are produced by Westport Winery and are available for tasting only in the gift shops of the winery and the International Mermaid Museum, the distillery page says. A fire on 15 May 2021 destroyed the distillery's pole building with its still and all of the company's warehoused spirits, and no one was injured, Great Northwest Wine reported. Blain Roberts said the family did not know the cause and was distilling water at the time, and the family planned to rebuild, the report added.
