Purity Vodka: How a Swedish Distillery Built Its Spirit on Copper Contact

The aim of Purity was to create the "best vodka or gin for a Martini", according to master blender and CEO Mathias Tönnesson in The Spirits Business. Its home is Ellinge Castle in southern Sweden, the magazine wrote, where production has run since 2009 according to its Swedish distributor.

What Purity vodka is made from

Purity is a dual-grain vodka made with malted barley and organic winter wheat, The Spirits Business wrote. Tönnesson described winter wheat as crisp and clear in flavour and malted barley as sweet and round, and the magazine named Stefan Magnusson as the master distiller who helms production.

The heart spirit is later blended with column-distilled wheat spirit and Purity water, the distillery's website says. Magnusson's stated ambition, in the website's words, is "to create the world’s smoothest vodka".

How Purity's copper-surface distillation works

The process was created by Leif Nerhammars, and its first cycle is 17 distillation steps over six hours, which yields Purity Estate 17 Reserve, The Spirits Business reported. The 34 Edition goes through an additional 17 distillations, 34 in total, over 12 hours, and Connoisseur 51 Reserve takes 51 distillations over a 20-hour period, the magazine said. The distillery also makes gin and flavoured vodka on a Purity Vodka 34 base, and the gins use nine botanicals including lingonberry. The gin range includes a Nordic Dry Gin, a Navy Strength at 57.14% ABV, and an Old Tom.

Where Purity vodka is sold

Purity was looking to build sales in Europe in 2024, highlighting Sweden, Denmark, Poland, Italy, the Baltics, Hungary, and Spain, and it was seeking a distributor in the UK, France, Germany, and Austria, The Spirits Business wrote. At home, the 34 Edition organic vodka is stocked in 24 Systembolaget stores and can be ordered nationwide through Systembolaget, the distributor's release says.
