Rock Town: The History of a Little Rock Distillery

Rock Town Distillery opened in Little Rock in 2010, the Encyclopedia of Arkansas records. Its first vodka, gin, and un-aged Arkansas Lightning whiskey generated enough revenue to fund more expensive and specialized spirits, the encyclopedia says.

How Phil Brandon started Rock Town

Phil Brandon, a former Alltel employee, set up the distillery on East 6th Street in downtown Little Rock, according to the Encyclopedia of Arkansas. To learn distilling, he attended classes, visited other distilleries, and trained with master distillers at Kentucky-based Maker's Mark, the encyclopedia says.

Where the grain comes from

The company planned to use only Arkansas-grown ingredients, with an exception for gin and a few other items, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported on June 25, 2010 once Brandon's equipment had arrived, as the encyclopedia entry notes. Brandon said at the time that his corn and wheat came from a company in Stuttgart, Arkansas. A fifth-generation Arkansan, Brandon wanted to source as many products as he could from Arkansas when he started the distillery, he told Garden & Gun. Rock Town buys grain grown within 125 miles of the distillery for its vodka, gin, and whiskies, the magazine reported.

The spirits that followed

Flavored versions of Arkansas Lightning came next, along with bourbon, hickory-smoked whiskey, rye whiskey, a barrel-aged rum, a coffee liqueur, and flavored vodkas, the encyclopedia says. Rock Town Vodka is distilled six times from corn and filtered, and the distillery's vodka page says the corn base makes it naturally gluten-free.

Rock Town's medals

The vodka page lists a Double Gold Medal from the 2022 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. In 2011 Brandon's Gin won double gold at the same competition against more than thirty other brands, and ten years later the Single Barrel Bourbon won double gold there too, the encyclopedia records.

The move to Main Street

In 2018 the distillery moved to a new site at 12th and Main Street, a downtown Little Rock warehouse of about 25,000 square feet where public tours run multiple times a day, the encyclopedia says.
