Chopin Vodka: Potatoes, Rye, and Wheat Through an 1896 Copper Still in Krzesk

Chopin's website says that "In 1993 Chopin created the world's first super premium vodka, and the luxury vodka category was born." Founder Tadeusz Dorda told VinePair in 2023 that the brand launched that year to celebrate Polish heritage and craftsmanship.

Where Chopin vodka is made

The estate covers 17 acres of farmland near the hamlet of Krzesk, every ingredient is grown within 20 miles, and the water comes from an artesian spring beneath the grounds, Chopin's distillery page says.

The vodka is distilled in the original copper still, built in 1896 and one of the oldest remaining stills in Poland, the same page says. Master Distiller Waldemar Durakiewicz has been with Chopin for more than 40 years and oversees every step, the heritage page says.

How the potato vodka is made

Potatoes of a special high-starch variety go into the ground around the middle of April and are ready to harvest by mid-to-late September, the distillery page says. The potatoes are sometimes re-buried in soil to keep them cool while they wait their turn in the distillery. Fermentation with the house yeast strain lasts two weeks, and after distillation the spirit rests another two weeks in barrels.

The range: potato, rye, wheat, and Family Reserve

Chopin's portfolio is three single-ingredient vodkas, potato, rye, and wheat, alongside Chopin Family Reserve, VinePair wrote in 2023. Family Reserve is distilled from summer potatoes harvested in July, about three months earlier than usual, then rested for two years in 50-year-old Polish oak barrels, Dorda told VinePair. Acquire called Family Reserve the distiller's new flagship and the first young potato vodka of its kind.

What Dorda said in 2023

The distillery is about 70 miles from the Ukrainian border, and Chopin gave all proceeds from website sales to World Central Kitchen after the conflict erupted, Dorda told VinePair. For its 30th anniversary in 2023, he said he would travel the country in May to host vodka masterclasses and that Chopin was launching Bartender's Choice, a high-proof rye vodka for bartenders.
