Sobieski Vodka: The Starogard Gdański Distillery Behind the Polish Brand
In August 2001 the Ministry of Treasury agreed to sell 79.99% of the Starogard Gdański distillery company to Belvedere Dystrybucja, owned by the French spirits group Belvedere S.A., the distillery's history page says. The deal closed on 17 January 2002, and the company took the name Destylarnia Sobieski as of 1 October 2003, by the same account.
The Starogard Gdański distillery before Sobieski
The distillery dates to 1846, when the Gdańsk merchant Herman Winkelhausen set up a plant there for vodkas, liqueurs, and brandies, its history page says, and its operator's current website gives the same year. Beverage Information Group likewise reported in 2019 that Sobieski's roots date back to Poland, where the Sobieski Company was formed in 1846. The first spirit rectification plant in the Pomeranian region was created there in 1871, and the plant made over 60 brands of alcohol between the world wars, the history page says.
The Treasury bought part of the plant in 1925 under the State Spirit Monopoly, and during the Nazi occupation it produced mainly technical spirit for the army, by the same page's account. The plant was set on fire in the Second World War, rebuilt in 1945, and became state property under the Polmos name, the operator's website adds.
Who runs the Sobieski distillery now
Polmos was split into 25 independent state production works in 1991, the history page says. The distillery's operator, part of the United Beverages Group, became the owner of the plant in 2020, and the distillery produces and bottles all of the operator's spirits, Sobieski among them, the current website says.
How Sobieski reached Sazerac in the US
US distribution of Marie Brizard Wine & Spirits brands was to move to Sazerac's US distribution arm, 375 Park Avenue Spirits, from 1 January 2020, The Spirits Business reported in October 2019. The French group had concluded its US sales were structurally insufficient, the report said. Jason Schladenhauffen of 375 Park Avenue Spirits called Sobieski a top-30 global brand within its category, in the same report. Sobieski added a Polish rye vodka and a range of flavored vodkas to the distributor's portfolio, the company said, as Beverage Information Group reported. Each label approval on file is listed in the TTB label records for Sobieski on this page.
