Fleischmann's Vodka: From a Cincinnati Gin Distillery to the Label Origins on File

By the 1960s the distilling side of Fleischmann's was making gin, vodka, rye, and bourbon and importing Black and White Scotch and, from 1974, Canadian LTD, bourbonveach.com says. The brand's gin boasts that it was the first gin distilled within the United States, the MSU Campus Archaeology Program notes.

How the Fleischmann brothers started distilling

The Fleischmann brothers came to the United States in 1865 from Moravia-Silesia, the MSU Campus Archaeology Program says. Their father had worked as a distiller and yeast producer in Europe, the program adds. They began standardized yeast production in 1868 with the Fleischmann Yeast Company and opened their first gin distillery two years later, by the program's account.

Charles and his younger brother Maximillian settled in Cincinnati, Ohio and built the distillery with a partner distiller at Riverside, Ohio, bourbonveach.com says. They started with gin and introduced Sylvan Grove Bourbon in 1870, but became most well known for their yeast, the same history says.

Rye in Peekskill, bourbon in Owensboro, and gin by the million

A distillery at Peekskill, New York was built in 1901 to make the company's rye whiskey, and in 1908 it released an "Eastern Rye" made from 100% rye grain, bourbonveach.com says. In 1940 the company began making straight bourbon and rye at the Daviess County Distillery in Owensboro, Kentucky, the same history says. During the Second World War it developed yeast for the US Army that could survive without refrigeration, the MSU program says. Glenmore was selling over a million cases a year of Fleischmann's Gin in the early 1990s, by the same account.

An approval dated 11 July 2023, filed by Sazerac Company, Inc. of New Orleans, lists American. Buffalo Trace Distillery, Inc. of Frankfort, Kentucky filed approvals dated 12 September 2024 listing United Kingdom and approvals from 26 March to 12 September 2025 listing Ireland.
