Glass Vodka: The Seattle Distillery Named for the Northwest's Glass Art
Glass Distillery in Seattle, started in 2011, launched its flagship Glass Vodka, made using grapes grown in the Pacific Northwest, together with the opening of a tasting room in the SODO district, The Spirits Business reported in June 2012. Founder Ian MacNeil told the publication he believed the Pacific Northwest is “one of the best winemaking regions in the world,” and that the vodka was designed for drinking on its own or anchoring a cocktail.
How Glass Vodka is made from wine
Glass Vodka is made with Washington wine rather than plain grapes, Seattle Met reported in June 2012, and MacNeil and his partner Adrian Higginbotham described it as more complex, with a cool finish. The Glass and Gridiron vodkas are based on Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay wine grapes rather than potatoes or grain, Seattle magazine said when it named Glass Distillery its Best New Distillery for 2012.
The water comes from artesian wells on Higginbotham's eastern Washington wheat and hay farm, where he is a fourth-generation farmer, and the equipment includes a handmade German still and a bottling line made in Hungary, the magazine added. The copper still stands 17.5 feet tall, and MacNeil and Higginbotham launched the vodka to showcase local glass artisans and wine producers, The Spirits Business said.
The SoDo plan before the doors opened
Before the distillery opened, MacNeil planned to call it Lachselian Wine & Spirits, and he named the spirit Glass Vodka after one of the Northwest's leading artist industries, Seattle magazine reported. The space's new concrete floor would glitter with a confetti of Dale Chihuly glass, the magazine added. In June 2012 Glass Vodka served as the exclusive vodka of the Access House at the Aspen Food and Wine Classic, Seattle Met reported.
Gridiron, prices, and limited editions
Gridiron, the second vodka, was priced at $14.25 base against $32.95 for Glass Vodka, Seattle magazine said in 2012. Planned limited editions would carry glass pieces from local artists, including Dale Chihuly, embedded in the bottle bottoms, with proceeds going to local charities, the magazine added.
