Hangar 1 Vodka: From St George's Alameda Hangar to a Partner Distillery

Hangar 1 began in 2002 when St George Spirits' Jörg Rupf and Lance Winters, with Ansley Coale of Germain-Robin, applied what they had learned about fruit flavors in eaux de vie to flavored vodka, Hoodline recounted in 2022. Twenty years later the brand announced it would close its Alameda tasting room, with December 18, 2022 planned as the last day, the same report said.

How Hangar 1 vodka began at St George Spirits

Rupf launched St George in 1982 to distill local fruit into eau-de-vie, and the company marked its 20th anniversary before introducing Hangar 1, Market Watch wrote in 2015. Winters distilled the vodka from fresh fruit and Viognier grapes in eau-de-vie pot stills, the feature said. “I saw all these flavored vodkas and thought they were terrible,” Winters told Market Watch, adding “Their taste profiles led with alcohol and maybe a hint of flavor.”

The operation moved into a 65,000-square-foot hangar in Alameda in 2004 and soon opened a tasting room, according to Hoodline. Hangar 1 had reached national distribution and annual depletions of 37,000 cases, Market Watch reported in 2015.

Who has produced Hangar 1 since 2014

Proximo wanted to make the vodka on its own in Building 22 at 2505 Monarch St., an Alameda Journal item from January 2014 said. In April 2014 Shanken News Daily reported that production was moving to a new 32,500-square-foot distillery with a 500-gallon still at the Alameda Naval Station, expected to be functional by summer, with a tasting room slated for 2015.

Caley Shoemaker became head distiller with the move, joining from Stranahan's Colorado Whiskey, when the range ran to original, Mandarin Blossom, Buddha's Hand Citron, and Kaffir Lime, the same report said. Hoodline later dated the opening of the tasting room and production facility next to St George's to 2017.

Where Hangar 1 vodka stands after the closure announcement

Production was to move to an unnamed partner distillery, and a brand spokesperson said Hangar 1 Vodka would continue to be made at that Bay Area distillery using the same production methods and ingredients, Hoodline reported. California is its home and terroir, and it sources ingredients only when the season is right, the Hangar 1 website says. The site now introduces Bentwing Brandy beside its vodkas and seltzers, and its 2026 footer still names Alameda, California.
