Nikolai Vodka: A Seagram-Era Value Brand and the Label Origins on File Today

Sazerac's catalog sheet for Nikolai Vodka 1L 80 Proof calls the vodka triple-distilled in one field and quadruple distilled in another. The same sheet lists it at 40% alcohol by volume from grain, with the United States and Kentucky as the country and subdivision of origin.

How Nikolai vodka began

Nikolai is a vodka brand on the United States market that was originally launched and developed by Seagram and has existed since at least 1963, Wikipedia says, citing newspaper advertising from that year. It has been marketed primarily as a value-oriented brand, advertised as priced very reasonably while tasting like more expensive vodka, by the same account.

How Nikolai vodka is positioned

Nikolai is sold in 80, 90, and 100 proof bottlings, Wikipedia says. The Sazerac Company sorts its vodka brands into three categories, "super premium", "premium", and "standard", and places Nikolai in the last of these, the same article says. Sazerac's own product catalog puts the brand statement as proof that "premium quality and style don't need to come with a premium price" across a wide selection of proofs and sizes. Spirit reviewer Bob Emmons described Nikolai 80 proof as having "few flavors other than alcohol and a light burn" in a 1999 book, Wikipedia records.
