Pinnacle Vodka: From French Wheat in Maine to Corn in Kentucky

White Rock Distilleries sold Pinnacle Vodka and Calico Jack, with related assets including the bottling plant, to Beam Inc. for $605 million in April 2012, the Sun Journal of Lewiston, Maine reported. In October 2013 Beam sold that plant to a unit of Sazerac and began moving Pinnacle bottling to Frankfort, Kentucky, a transition due to finish in the first quarter of 2014, the Portland Press Herald reported.

How Pinnacle started at White Rock in Lewiston

In 2002 Paul Coulombe had an idea to create a vodka with French cachet, sold at a price people could afford, Beam Suntory's Pinnacle brand site says. His father had bought White Rock Distilleries in Lewiston for $100,000 in 1970, the Sun Journal reported in 2015. Pinnacle launched as a value Grey Goose competitor, and Coulombe took inspiration from the creator of Grey Goose, a friend of his, by the brand site's account.

What went into the French-made Pinnacle

The vodka was distilled five times in France's Cognac region from winter wheat grown in Brie, in northern France, with spring water from the Charente region, according to Beam Suntory's site. The vodka for Pinnacle was imported from France and the brand came in 31 flavors, the Sun Journal reported in 2012. White Rock produced 3.9 million cases in 2011, and its top-selling brand was Pinnacle Whipped, the same report said.

What Pinnacle vodka is made from today

Pinnacle was a French imported vodka until 2021, Beam Suntory's site says. It no longer uses French vodka and has become a corn vodka made with distillate from CIE, a distillery in Indiana, the site says.
