Recipe 21 Vodka: A Rochester Well Brand Built for Bartenders, and Its Label Filers Since 2024

Recipe 21's four-times distilled vodka was introduced in 2012, and its Rochester, New York line of value-priced spirits was selling more than 100,000 cases a year by December 2017, a LiDestri Spirits press release carried by BXP Magazine said. Sales had risen 45 percent since 2016, and the brand was seeking distributors in new markets across the country, the same release said.

What LiDestri makes under the Recipe 21 name

The line, produced by LiDestri Spirits, included a "Premium Vodka," orange, grape, and cherry vodkas, a London dry gin, a silver tequila, a blended whiskey, a white rum, triple sec, and peach schnapps, the release said. LiDestri planned to expand the portfolio with new and trending flavors and product categories. The vodka is distilled from American grain, a product listing by the Rochester retailer Marketview Liquor says.

How Recipe 21 vodka was sold: bars first

Recipe 21 was aimed at millennials and the bartenders who serve them, according to the release. Ricky Tatar, a product manager at LiDestri Food and Drink, said the company wanted a distributor that knew how to sell a brand family, "in this case, a beer and wine distributor." Lake Beverage Distributing, known for a wide range of domestic and foreign beer brands, took that role, with Try-It Distributing, Spirit & Sanzone, Saratoga Eagle Sales & Service, Oak Beverage, and Eagle Beverage credited as other key distributors.

Tatar said buy-in had come from quality- and value-seeking consumers and from bar managers stocking their well with something of higher quality. A bar manager at MacGregor's Grill & Tap Room in Rochester, quoted in the release, called Recipe 21 "a bartender's best friend" because one order gave him a deep line of affordable spirits. At that point the brand was sold in New York, Connecticut, Washington, D.C., Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, and Florida, the release said.
