Triple Eight: The History of Nantucket's Island Vodka
The group behind Cisco Brewers set out in 1997 to make high proofed spirits, hoping for grappa and fruit brandies before settling on whiskey, Yesterday's Island reported in 2021. Because whiskey sits so long in wood, the team tried vodka first, invited the public to buy futures on each barrel of Notch Whiskey, and Triple Eight Vodka became the first product bottled from the tiny outdoor operation.
Who started Triple Eight and how it got its name
Difford's Guide dates the distillery to 1997, started by Dean and Melissa Long, and says it is named after Nantucket Well #888, which supplies its water. Randy Hudson is founder and master blender and Bryan Jennings is head distiller, an agency announcement on The PR Net says, adding that the brand will mark its 25th anniversary over the coming year.
Why Triple Eight vodka is mostly about water
The bottle is predominantly water, Randy Hudson told Take Magazine in 2017, and Triple Eight has its own well and filters the water through ultra pure sand. Yesterday's Island says the vodka is made from organically grown corn and triple distilled.
The distillery's product page describes its Organic Vodka as an organic wheat spirit blended with Nantucket water at 80 proof, and its home page says the vodka is produced on Nantucket Island from organically grown grain.
The flavored vodkas
Real fruit goes into the flavored vodkas, with cranberries from Cape Cod and Nantucket and blueberries from Maine, Take Magazine reported. The product page lists Cranberry cold infused at 68 proof, Orange made by hand zesting oranges at 78 proof, Vanilla with Madagascar and New Guinea beans, Raspberry from Oregon fruit, and Grapefruit as the latest addition.
Missouri, New Hampshire, and Nantucket on file
Approvals filed by Crown Valley Distilling Co. of Sainte Genevieve, Missouri list Missouri as the label origin on file, while a later Crown Valley filing lists Massachusetts, the TTB snapshot shows. Fabrizia Spirits, LLC of Salem, New Hampshire filed approvals listing New Hampshire as the label origin on file, with a November 2022 filing listing Massachusetts instead.
