UV Vodka: The Story of a Phillips Distilling Brand From Minnesota

Phillips unveiled an array of UV flavors first and added an unflavored version only several years later, the opposite of how most vodka brands start, Shanken News Daily reported in 2012. In 2011 UV grew 19.4% to 1.2 million cases, and it had won Impact Hot Brand honors for six years running, the same report said.

The Phillips family company behind UV

The company behind UV was started in 1912 by the Phillips family, is the largest spirits maker in Minnesota, and employs more than 200 Minnesotans, Phillips Distilling's website says. UV itself was inspired by the flavored vodkas Phillips introduced in the 1950s, according to Shanken News Daily. Twin Cities Business credits Dean Phillips, who is Phillips Distilling's CEO and the son of Eddie Phillips, with introducing the UV brand flavored vodkas.

When UV vodka launched: two accounts

Shanken News Daily dates the launch of UV vodka to 2002. A portfolio page by Peter Olson, a marketer who worked on the brand's Be UV campaign, instead says Phillips Distilling launched UV Blue Raspberry Vodka in 2001.

How UV vodka grew through flavors

Within a few short years of launch, UV had grown to a portfolio of 21 flavors, the Olson portfolio says. UV Cake, launched in June 2011, depleted 150,000 nine-liter cases that year and became the second-biggest product in the line behind raspberry-flavored UV Blue, Shanken News Daily reported. Phillips expected Cake to reach 500,000 cases in 2012, the report said. Dean Phillips projected total UV volume of 1.7 million cases for 2012, and California was then the brand's biggest market at around 300,000 cases a year, the same report said.

Who makes UV and its label records

UV is produced and bottled by Phillips Products Co., Princeton, MN, and UV Vodka is 40% alc/vol while the UV Flavored Vodkas are 30% alc/vol, the UV Vodka website footer says. In the BUY.VODKA TTB snapshot, the UV approvals were filed under a different company name, United States Distilled Products Co. of Princeton, Minnesota.
