White Claw Spirits: How a Hard Seltzer Brand Moved Into Vodka
White Claw Spirits announced a new line of regular and flavored vodka on 21 March 2023, with bottles reaching select markets across North America, CNBC reported that day. Two months earlier Shanken News Daily had reported that the hard seltzer leader was entering the spirits category with a launch backed by digital and out-of-home ads, online videos, and experiential events.
How White Claw Spirits makes its vodka
The vodka is made with 100% American grain, distilled five times in columns with copper plates, and filtered through activated carbon from charred coconut shells, the company said in a statement carried by CSP Daily News. The distillery partner was undisclosed, but the vodka is bottled in Bardstown, Kentucky, Shanken News Daily reported at launch. The company spent almost a decade developing a new way to show drinkers what complexity looks, tastes, and feels like within the minimalist experience of vodka, Mark Anthony Group chief executive Anthony von Mandl said in the launch release.
Flavors, bottle sizes, and pricing
The launch included a straight vodka at 40% abv and pineapple, mango, and black cherry flavors at 30% abv, in 50-ml, 750-ml, and 1-liter bottles, according to Shanken News Daily. The pricing strategy was to be line priced with Tito's, the same report said.
The vodka sodas sold alongside it
White Claw Spirits also launched canned vodka sodas, which FOX Business reported were available only in the U.S., in variety or single-flavor packs, with pineapple, peach, wild cherry, and watermelon flavors at 4.5% alcohol by volume. The 100-calorie cans are made with the same vodka sold in bottles, CNBC reported. The cans are 35cl and sold in four-packs and variety eight-packs, Global Drinks Intel reported.
White Claw Spirits' planned retail rollout
Shanken News Daily reported this planned rollout in January 2023: Total Wine & More, Albertsons, BevMo, and Spec's that month, Kroger, Meijer, and Hy-Vee in February, and Walmart locations that sell spirits in April and May.
How the launch fared by May 2023
By May 2023 the Vodka + Soda RTD was already the third-ranked spirits seltzer brand in the U.S. with distribution still building, Mark Anthony Brands chief commercial officer David Barnett told Shanken News Daily. In vodka, he added, the company was a David amongst Goliaths. The core White Claw seltzer had slipped 4.5% to approximately 85 million 2.25-gallon cases in the U.S. in 2022 but had returned to growth in recent months, the same article said, citing Impact Databank.
