Crystal Head Vodka: A Head-Shaped Bottle and Three Expressions Blended in Newfoundland

Crystal Head Vodka launched in 2008 with a first release in Southern California that September, then expanded into more U.S. markets, the brand's website says. The brand was started by Dan Aykroyd with American artist John Alexander, whose concept paired the vodka with a bottle inspired by the legend of the thirteen crystal skulls, the site adds.

Who designed the Crystal Head bottle

Alexander designed the bottle, with creative input from Aykroyd, as a head rather than a traditional skull, according to the website. The head represents life, creativity, power, and enlightenment in the brand story, the site says. Alexander is known for portrait and landscape work held in major museum and private collections, the same page notes.

Where Crystal Head Vodka is made

The vodka is made in St John's, Newfoundland, Canada, and each expression is blended with Newfoundland water, by the website's account. No glycerol, citrus oils, or sugars are added to any expression, which the site calls completely additive-free.

Original, Aurora, and Onyx: three base ingredients

The Original is made from Canadian corn, distilled four times into a neutral grain spirit, and filtered seven times, three of them through layers of Herkimer diamonds, the website says. That corn is Peaches and Cream corn from Chatham, Ontario, a variety with yellow and white kernels, the site adds. Aurora followed in 2016, made from English wheat with five distillations, in a bottle whose iridescent metallized finish means no two are alike, according to the Aurora page.

Onyx launched in 2020 with Blue Weber agave from a single farm in Mexico, the website says. It is distilled three times in total, twice through a copper pot and once through a column still, the site's FAQ states. Beverage Industry wrote that Onyx is filtered through more than 10,000 Herkimer diamonds and sold in a glossy black bottle with a matching crest debossed cap.

The brand makes no flavored vodka, the website says. Every limited-edition bottle holds the Original, including a Lunar Series that began with the Year of the Dragon and continued with the Snake and the Horse.
