Luksusowa Vodka: Poland's Baltic-Coast Potato Spirit, Bottled in Zielona Góra

Luksusowa was first made in 1928 at Polmos Warsaw and is one of the oldest Polish vodka brands, Difford's Guide says. After joining Deutsch's US portfolio in 2010, the potato vodka grew 15% to 250,000 cases in 2015, Shanken News Daily reported, citing Impact Databank.

How Luksusowa potato vodka is made

Spirit from potatoes grown along the Baltic Sea coast is distilled at several locations and shipped by rail to Zielona Góra, where it is blended with water and bottled on site, Difford's Guide says. The vodka is not charcoal filtered and is naturally sweet without added sugar, the guide adds. Deutsch Family Wine & Spirits says the potatoes are sourced from family farms. Deutsch calls Luksusowa "the largest and most decorated potato vodka in the world."

Strengths and the bottle

Luksusowa was originally made at 45% alc./vol., a red label version at that strength is still produced, and a Black Label variant at 50% alc./vol. is also marketed, Difford's Guide says. The guide lists the producer as Polmos Zielona Góra and lists Luksusowa Silver at 40% alc./vol., 80 proof, a product of Poland. The label has changed over the years, but the bottle has always remained tall and square, it notes.

How Deutsch became the US importer

Luksusowa would be sold nationwide at approximately $24.99 for the 1.75L, $16.99 for the 1L, and $13.99 for the 750ml, Drinks International reported in January 2010. Peter Deutsch, the importer's CEO, called vodka the #1 consumed spirit in the US at 55 million cases a year, the report said. Victor Jerez, CEO of Wyborowa SA, said the partnership would draw on Deutsch's US distributor network to grow Luksusowa into one of the leading imported vodkas in the country.
