Popov Vodka: A Low-Price Label Produced by Heublein, and the Label Origins on File Today

Popov is a grain-based vodka sold at a low price point and marketed for mixed drinks, with a significant share of the vodka sold in the United States, the Busy Beaver Button Museum says. For some time it was produced by Heublein, an American producer and distributor credited with popularizing vodka in the United States, the museum adds.

Popov vodka in the Heublein years

John Martin revived distillery operations at Heublein in 1933 and became company president, Encyclopedia.com's Heublein history records. Martin promoted the less expensive vodka labels Relska and Popov aggressively, and the cheaper brands grew in popularity during the 1960s, by the same account. A printed promotional credit from that era gives the vodka as 80 proof and a Hartford, Connecticut address, the Busy Beaver Button Museum's catalogue shows.

Popov vodka in the 1970s and 1980s

Popov in the 1970s was a prominent brand in the growing American vodka market, and the vodka was filtered through charcoal, a catalogue note for a 1970s bottle from the retailer Hedonism Wines says. The same note describes the brand identity of that era as "a clean, accessible spirit." Heublein had become essentially a distiller of vodka under the Smirnoff, Relska, Koskarva, Arrow, and Popov brands, and an importer of other beverages, Encyclopedia.com's history says.
