Pravda Vodka: A Polish Rye Vodka From Southern Poland and Its US Label Filers
The Globe and Mail wrote in 2005 that Pravda, Polish for truth, launched in selected US regions in 2003 and topped 50,000 cases in its first full year, the fastest-selling new luxury vodka. Its roots go back to 1743, when the Nissenbaum family first made it in southern Poland, and the current product comes from a distillery revived in the 1980s by Sigmund Nissenbaum, the same column said.
How Pravda vodka is made
Pravda Classic, at 40% vol, is distilled six times from a selected blend of Polish rye and grains with Beskid mountain spring water, then put through multi-stage activated charcoal filtration, Pravda's website says. The spirit passes through six tall copper-lined rectification columns, the water is introduced gradually over two weeks, and the charcoal comes from French forests before cold stabilization and high-pressure filtration, the site's story page adds.
A secondary account, an Australian retailer listing by Nicks Wine Merchants, describes a five step process in small batches under sixth generation master distiller Aleksandra Kulak in Bielsko-Biala, using late harvest rye.
Pravda flavors and the champagne-shaped bottle
Pravda's website lists Pravda Espresso, 37.5% vol, made with extracts from roasted Arabica and Robusta beans, with a Coconut Pineapple marked coming soon. The frosted bottle is shaped to evoke a champagne bottle, with low shoulders, a squat body, and a big fake purple gemstone above the logo, in The Globe and Mail's 2005 telling.
How Pravda vodka entered North America
Pravda planned Philadelphia bar tastings where drinkers would be invited to leave anonymous voicemail verdicts for TasteTheTruth.com, Chief Marketer reported. According to The Globe and Mail, Pravda was chosen as best luxury vodka at the 2004 World Beverage Championships in San Francisco. The brand launched in Western Canada in 2005 and reached Ontario that July, the column added. Today the website says the brand ships to 40-plus US states.
