Tito's Handmade Vodka: How Texas Got Its First Legal Distillery

Tito Beveridge earned a degree in geology and geophysics from The University of Texas in Austin in 1984 and went into the oil and gas industry, running seismic crews in Venezuela, Beverage Industry says. He fought for and won his permit in 1995 and sold his first case in April 1997, he told the magazine in 2015.

From oil fields to vodka

Tito is a completely self-taught distiller who relied on prohibition-era images of pot stills and lore from the oil fields to work out his method, his company's timeline says. The main differentiator, in his words to Beverage Industry, was doing head and tail cuts in an old-fashioned pot still with a formula of American corn. The company settled on corn after trying all kinds of bases, and the vodka is distilled from corn, certified gluten-free, and distilled and bottled by Fifth Generation, Inc. of Austin, Texas, Tito's website says.

How Tito's Handmade Vodka was funded and named

Investors turned Tito down again and again, so he racked up 19 credit cards and funded himself, the timeline recounts. He had no investors and ran up around $80,000 on those 19 cards, Beverage Industry says. A friend suggested the company name Fifth Generation because he is a fifth-generation Texan who generates fifths, Beveridge told The Austin Chronicle in 2002. A nearby flock of mockingbirds, the Texas state bird, inspired the name Mockingbird Distillery, and the Shack was the first building constructed there, the timeline says.

The Austin distillery site

The permits made Tito the first legal, operating distillery in Texas, by the timeline's account, and the company broke ground on 12 acres of land in rural Southeast Austin. Beveridge told The Austin Chronicle that he bought the land in February 1995 and that the property is 13 acres.

Giving back

After its first nonprofit event in 1997 the brand kept supporting philanthropic causes and launched Love, Tito's to give back to communities, the timeline says. Beveridge has helped Austin-based Emancipet, a spay/neuter clinic, for more than 15 years, Beverage Industry says.
